Ask the County Executive to
Fully Fund the Library!

Did you know…?

Less than 1¢ of each tax dollar goes to the library system.

Libraries are still recovering from the 1990s draconian cuts.

Here at Chevy Chase, about 1,500 different people use the library every week for information, entertainment and education.

All holds go through Chevy Chase after Aspen Hill and Bethesda. This can mean 50-80 holds per day and hundreds of holds per week. In a sense, we’re providing service for the 20 other branches of the system.

The Chevy Chase library is already short three staff positions.

What if we don’t get enough funding?

Less money for collections means it will be harder for us to get popular books like New York Times bestsellers—or they may not be available at all.
With insufficient staff, we’ll wait longer for the books we want, with fewer people reshelving books and processing holds.
Unless the library computer server is upgraded, lookups, Internet access, holds placement and research will continue to grow progressively slower.
We may need to cut hours.

How can you help in less than 5 minutes?
It’s easy! Just ask County Executive Doug Duncan to include full funding for the library system in his 2005-06 budget, which he submits to the County Council in March. Let him know libraries are important to you!
